This years Levenshulme Christmas Lights Switch on and Outdoor party on Tuesday 30 November had a touch of glamour, when ‘Elvis’ made a surprise visit to bring a touch of ‘Tinseltown’ to the area.
‘Elvis’ in the form of the award winning radio presenter - Joe Casserley from ALL FM radio’s Full Irish radio show warmed up the crowd, who were waiting for the official switch on by the Lord Mayor of Manchester - Councillor Mark Hackett.
Other entertainment included a special Christmas Carol service by St Mary’s School choir who came along with their teachers and headmaster – David Cunliffe.
Manchester United’s mascot - ‘Fred the Red’ was received with shouts of joy when he arrived and people queued up all night to get a photograph with their hero.
Over five hundred children were given a free present provided by local traders and a free visit to Father Christmas in his special Grotto, who was kept busy for three solid hours in near Arctic conditions.

One of the organisers Lawrence Hennigan said “It was a great family atmosphere for such a very cold night, poor Fr Christmas must have thought he was still in the North Pole. Despite the sub zero temperatures there was an electric atmosphere in the village.
The event was a joint partnership between the council and local traders who had all contributed to the event and the dazzling Christmas Lights Display which runs along the A6 Stockport Road. I feel very proud to be celebrating twenty one years of doing business here, the people are simply the best”
Levenshulme councillor John Commons said “The free outdoor Christmas party is always one of the area’s annual highlights. It was a fantastic family celebration, the children really loved meeting Santa. The smiles on their faces when they received a free Christmas present is what Christmas is all about.
The parents can not believe that they got to see Father Christmas free of charge and that the children got a free present and photograph with Fr Christmas and the other celebrities. The event would not be possible without the joint partnership between the city council and local traders.”
