The Christmas Lights Switch On 2011

Levenshulme Street Market

This years Christmas Light Switch On will be held on Friday 9th December with entertainment from 4.30pm to 6pm. The date has been changed from the previously published date to accommodate everyone who wanted to attend.

Local Children can meet Father Christmas on the Village Green on the Corner of Chapel Street and Stockport Road from 4.30pm

The event is the result of a joint partnership between the Local Traders and Manchester City Council.

As traders we all benefit from this event and it will cost the Traders Association around £1650. This money is raised each year from donations from a small number of local traders.

The Lights are paid for by Cash Grant applications by the Levenshulme Community Association to whom we are very grateful.

We all know how much the local community appreciate this event which involves over 400 presents being given to local children and who can all have their photos taken with Father Christmas. No other district shopping centre does this and it is what makes the Levenshulme event unique.

We are looking for some main sponsors (i.e. four at £250 each and the rest from donations from you all). Some of you may feel that you can give £10, others may give a lot more. I can personally assure you that every single penny that you give is very much appreciated.

I'm sure you will feel very proud to have donated to you see the childrens eyes light up when they receive their present from Father Christmas

"Independents’ Day 2011"
your high street needs you!

Monday 4th July

On 4th July 2011 across the country, the public will be encouraged to buy at least one item from their local, independent shop to keep the high street alive.

Skillsmart Retail and the National Skills Academy for Retail have teamed up with independent retailers and trade associations around the country to encourage the public to celebrate diversity on the high street and support their local, independent retailers on 4th July.

Retailers can download the ‘Your high street needs you!’ poster online, ‘like’ the campaign on Facebook and following it on twitter.

Independents’ Day

Fresh data from Local Data Company’s surveys of 2,700 UK retail destinations (out of a potential 4,400 total UK destinations), highlights that high street vacancy rates have started to rise again.

The Local Data Company states that 14.6% of outlets are now vacant. This indicates that approximately 50,000 units are now not currently open to business on the UK high streets, showing just how challenging the situation is on the ground.

In Levenshulme activities will be taking place on the day at various premises.

Anne Seaman, Chief Executive of Skillsmart Retail said: “We are delighted to lead this campaign and support small retailers.

Raising awareness amongst the public is one of the biggest challenges smaller retailers face and our message is about encouraging the public to use their local high street and understand how important a diverse retail sector is.

It’s also essential that local retailers understand that to compete today they need to be top of their game. The time for sitting back has passed and action is required: Your high street needs you!”

levenshulme traders Lord Mayor Mark Hackett and Lawrence Hennigan

For the past six months Lawrence, Mike and Monica from the Levenshulme traders have been very concerned about the damage to trade not only from the current economic climate but the roadworks in the Levenshulme area.

Since these meetings Lawrence has had several meetings with Cllr. Commons and Cassim Kaaba from the regeneration team to discuss ways of helping.

As a result of this there will be a business week in March 2011. This will involve a series of seminars for business help and advice

Before that, as part of the Levenshulme Festival, on Wednesday 3rd November 2010, the Levenshulme Traders Association in partnership with Manchester City Council will have a “Levenshulme means Business” event at m19 bar from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

We can all network together and discuss what the local traders would like to see happen during the business week next spring.

Please come and join the growing number of local businesses and find out how the Levenshulme Traders Association with Manchester City Council and its partners can help you.

You can meet your local council officers and Councillors, find out what they can do for your business and share your ideas for developing the Levenshulme Business Week in the Spring 2011. We also encourage you all to join The Traders Association.

The event is sponsored by Manchester City Council and The Levenshulme Traders Association.

This event is FREE. There will be refreshments on the night
